Aquella comunidad imaginada fue una instalación sonora y visual sobre el paisaje cultural de Covadonga creada por Mind Revolution y José Ferrero con el comisariado de Natalia Alonso Arduengo. La instalación se exhibió en el Museo Arqueológico de Asturias en mayo y junio de 2023.

Posteriormente, Mind Revolution creo esta obra sonora compuesta a partir de los sonidos de la instalación para ser publicada en el sello La Escucha Atenta.

El sábado 25 de julio de 1795, a las siete a caballo, partió Jovellanos camino de Covadonga. Mucho arbolado, hermoso y espeso. Grandes montañas de cimas escarpadas, de peñascos derrumbados. Ese paisaje, declarado Parque Nacional en 1918 por sus valores simbólicos de carácter identitario, sigue cumpliendo el canon romántico de una naturaleza majestuosa y sublime. Ese paisaje, que hoy mantiene el atractivo estético, también contiene un relato. ¿Cómo ha llegado la narración de Covadonga hasta nuestros días? ¿Cómo ha evolucionado y se ha adaptado a los tiempos?

El héroe legendario y la devoción mariana, el regionalismo y el nacionalismo, los católicos y los reformistas compartiendo lugar. Carolyn P. Boyd afirma que “los múltiples significados de Covadonga la hicieron apta para construir una comunidad imaginada en la que los valores e intereses en competencia podrían ser incorporados o solapados”.

José Ferrero & Mind Revolution se han aproximado al paisaje cultural de Covadonga desde la densidad de connotaciones. El primero, a través de una serie de fotografías que reclaman la mirad lúcida y la interpretación irónica. Abiertas a segundas lecturas, sus instantáneas empujan al cuestionamiento de los tópicos. Por su parte, Mind Revolution invita a la práctica de la escucha atenta a partir de unas piezas sonoras que dialogan entre sí, y también con las fotografías, generando un ambiente envolvente que va más allá del Santuario y que se expande al entorno natural y rural.

Joaquín Sabaté, hablando acerca de los “paisajes de la posmodernidad”, incide en que su conservación no puede cimentarse en la nostalgia pues “reducido a simple testimonio, el pasado puede convertirse en mero espectáculo, en teatro de la memoria, en una mera estrategia comercial de atracción de visitantes”. El árbol inclinado de raíz arrancada, ¿Es memoria de sí mismo?, ¿qué queda de aquella “comunidad imaginada”? Quizás, hoy, todos seamos turistas. Pero podemos ser turistas que se aproximen a un paisaje cultural en el que la polisemia sustituya al simple telón de fondo.

On Saturday, 25th July 1795, at seven o’clock, on horseback, Jovellanos set out for Covadonga. A landscape with abundant, beautiful, and dense foliage awaited him. Towering mountains with rugged peaks and scattered cliffs surrounded the area. This landscape, declared a National Park in 1918 for its symbolic and identity-defining values, continues to embody the romantic ideal of majestic and sublime nature. This landscape, which retains its aesthetic allure today, also holds a narrative. How has the story of Covadonga reached us? How has it evolved and adapted to the times?

The legendary hero and Marian devotion, regionalism and nationalism, Catholics and reformers sharing a space. Carolyn P. Boyd asserts that "the multiple meanings of Covadonga made it suitable for constructing an imagined community where competing values and interests could be incorporated or overlapped.”

José Ferrero & Mind Revolution have approached the cultural landscape of Covadonga through a density of connotations. The former, through a series of photographs that demand a discerning gaze and ironic interpretation. Open to multiple readings, his snapshots prompt questioning of clichés. Meanwhile, Mind Revolution invites careful listening through sound pieces that engage in dialogue with each other and with the photographs, creating an immersive atmosphere that extends beyond the Sanctuary to the natural and rural surroundings.

Joaquín Sabaté, speaking about "landscapes of postmodernity," emphasizes that their conservation cannot be based on nostalgia because "reduced to a mere testimony, the past can become a mere spectacle, a theater of memory, a mere commercial strategy to attract visitors." The tilted tree with uprooted roots, is it a memory of itself? What remains of that "imagined community"? Perhaps today we are all tourists. But we can be tourists who approach a cultural landscape where polysemy replaces the simple backdrop.
