El paisaje sonoro en tiempos de crisis también puede ser un silencio tenso. O la apariencia de silencio. 4,34 no solo posee una duración que remite de inmediato al absoluto no-silencio de John Cage. También está normalizado a -43,4 dB, es decir, al borde de lo simplemente audible.
La realización es muy simple, dejar el micrófono sobre un ordenador cuando no sucede nada, ni hay más actividad que esas misteriosas que ni controlamos ni podemos prever. El resultado es igualmente simple: el sonido de ventiladores y un mínimo, casi inapreciable de efectos magnéticos y retroalimentación. Es lo que sucede cuando no hay nada que grabar.
Por supuesto, en nuestros días sigue habiendo mucho que grabar, pero el cuasi-silencio de lo potencialmente generativo, sea un ordenador, una fábrica o un almacén, también se encuentra ahí, ominosamente.
